Conversation over the Fjords

Carving the undulating, grasping and retreating edges of a piece of steel, my thoughts wander from coral reefs to jigsaw puzzles and fractal geometry. I see coastlines, rivers and fjords. Beneath my torch, organisms rise up, reach out, grow and reproduce. Crackling fire. Leaping flames. The receding edge of burning paper. I remember the wind.

Conversation over the Fjords began as two abstract, map-like shapes, Thorfrid’s and Gaeirmund’s Fjords, carved from two BMW fenders, a gift from a stranger, now a friend. Those fjords inspired a collaboration with two other artists, and a reworking of the Fjords into Conversation. The back sheets are filled with the artist’s thoughts etched in steel, about collaboration, conversation and community, and in particular, about the collaboration and history of this piece.

Conversation over the Fjords is part of Greene’s Reflections series of large wall sculptures - place based explorations incorporating memories and reflections on history, economic, social and environmental change. Other works in the series include Tide Tables, Ducking Under Bridges and Underwater.

Conversations over the Fjords is on display at Brooklyn Boulders in Somerville, MA. Recycled steel, automotive paint, lacquer.
