Bonsai

Black rivers slice through the shadows and the underground in the narrow slot canyons of Southern Utah and the karst caves of New Zealand and Southern China. Some parts of the river are swift, twisting and cascading in the darkness. Elsewhere, the water pools. Deep and slow. Warm and mystical. Cold and deadly. Glowworms illuminate silhouettes. A shaft of filtered light connects two worlds.

Bonsai, glossy black and matte tan, carved from the fender of a BMW race car, is part of Greene’s Blackwater Canyons series - an exploration of the underground and semi-underground, from the caves of Southern China and New Zealand to the slot canyons of southern Utah and Arizona. The other works in the series are Dragon Dog Canyon and Lotta’s Grotto.
